el trastero

Almost one year ago I already posted a mathematical conjecture that I had came up with while working in some lighting experiments that I was doing. I found the solution by a combination of some strict proof followed by and extrapolation and formula symmetrization, but I didn’t prove it formally. Few days after my post, my friend Bruno Pedrosa Lopez (aka kneda) sent me the formal proof, which makes use of the properties of the Beta and Gamma functions and that of the double factorial. The proof, which I finally post here, is as follows (for a,b even, otherwise the integral cancels out by symmetry):

a Sofía le gustó la frase, y se la propuso como meta y regalo para cuando acabase el doctorado. hace poco me comentó que por fin ella puede también hacer lo mismo. y bien merecido. bienvenida al club de los que entramos al curro cuando nos apetece.

Me acabo de dar cuenta que prácticamente ninguno de mis amigos tiene ni ve la tele.

i like walking by the shops, slowly, seeing the shadows of the buildings and the sun fight to each other for space. it’s still not noon, so the streets are only for me, i can randomly j walk to get closer to whatever i see and find interesting. lastly, right before entering the underground, i pass by the cable car, and, sometimes, even get the “good morning” of some little girl from a family of tourists that await in the line.

I do believe in things most people dont believe in; I tend to see beauty and magic where most people are unable to see but ordinary things. I don’t need gods, religions, drugs, UFOs, or the sky for finding mystery, comfort or beauty. I find those things right here, everyday. Any sight in other direction is just a sad attempt and indication of lack of understanding and love for what we are. Im sorry! I do believe, YOU guys don’t. I’m sorry.

if i was asked if people still fall today into the cups & balls trick just few hours ago, i wouldn’t have answered “of course no one can fall into this trap anymore”. i have changed my mind today, when i saw this girl in the BART loosing $40 to the guy playing the trick.

the guy came in Embarcadero, and sat in one of the chairs. after some minutes he started playing the game with a very nicely man who pretended to be a random business man commuting to work. the business man won the game couple of times, and a third guy, sitting next to me, tells me i should play cause it seems to be easy to win the bet, according to what we just have seen. obviously the guy next to me is in their team too, so i refuse with a “i won’t go, sorry”. however a girl decides to go, and of course wins the first round, but losses 40 dollars to the second. the operation takes exactly the same amount of time it takes to arrive from Embarcadero to West Oakland. the girl starts shouting when she realizes what just happened, but the guy with the game, the business man and the guy sitting next to me, the three of them leave coincidentally in this station. so, yes, it still happens, despite we all know the game is designed for you to loose.

nunca pensé que el truco de los cubiletes y la bolita funcionara aún. quiero decir, que la gente con dos dedos de frente cayera en él. pero hoy he cambiado mi opinión cuando he visto como una chica perdía 40 dólares en el BART.

se cierran las puertas en Embarcadero, y un tipo que acaba de entrar toma asiento y juega con los cubiletes para sí mismo. un hombre trajeado que ha entrado en Embarcadero pero desde el bagón de al lado, le entra al juego. gana dos veces consecutivas, dejándonos bien claro que es muy fácil ganar. el hombre que se acaba de sentar a mi lado, que curiosamente también se ha incorporado al tren en Embarcadero, me anima a que pruebe suerte. contesto con una sonrisa y un “no voy a caer”. pero la chica del otro lado del bagón parece decidida a probar suerte. gana la primera mano, pero pierde los $40 pavos en la segunda. en cuanto se da cuenta de lo que ha pasado, empieza a gritar, pero es demasiado tarde porque la operación ha llevado exactamente el tiempo que se tarda en llegar de Embarcadero a Oakland Oeste. y los tres pavos ya han desaparecido. así que sí, el truco de los cubiletes y la pelotita, aún funciona.

mirando el libro de la chica que tengo sentada al lado mío en el b.a.r.t me alegro al comprobar que, si bien ya no puedo hablar nada de francés, al menos puedo leerlo perfectamente.

cada vez odio más volar en avión. es verdad que es maravilloso que los hombres hayan encontrado un modo de hacer aquello que más ansiaban pero les estaba vetado: volar. desafiaron la gravedad, la realidad, y consiguieron surcar los cielos.

volar a diez mil metros de altura, a casi mil kilómetros por hora acompañado de doscientas personas, me parece a veces un prodigio de la ingenería. sin embargo, otros días, sobre todo el mismo día que vuelo, me siento más rebelde y pienso que después de un siglo de aeronátuca aún estamos en pañales. a un viaje de 12 u 8 horas siempre hay que sumar cuatro de traslado y acceso a y desde las puertas de embarque, y 24 horas más de recuperación física. porque en estos viajes largos transcontinentales, siempre acabo con el cuello crugido, dolor de cabeza, resfriado y un oído con pinchazos agudos, y me lleva un día recuperarme. ingenieros, esto es la prehistoria, ¿o qué? hagan algo. por favor. . ¡YA!
